Fight Back! Post-Debate Call to Obamaction

 title=

Tonight we saw one of the biggest "gotcha politics" debates yet. The moderators seemed set on destroying Obama by using trivial matters to play "gotcha!" Tonight we also saw why Barack Obama is the right canidate for president. Tonight he showed why he is the right canidate to take on John McCain and the right canidate to turn around our country. Because he fought back by talking about what Americans care about. The issues.

Time and time again the moderators tried to use trivial matters to divide us and time and time again Barack Obama responded by talking about the serious problems facing our country. Health care, Iraq, the economy, the environment. And then they would attack again using the same old right-wing frames.

I think Barack got it right. The American people and the people of Pennsylvania are better then that. They can see through the petty attacks  and they will vote on the real issues. They will see Obama's record and his plan. And that record and that plan is clear.

Barack Obama will pass a comprehensive 100% Cap and Auction Carbon emissions plan.

Barack Obama will make massive investments in energy independence.

Barack Obama will invest in energy efficiency and promote fuel efficiency and alternatives to driving.

Barack Obama voted to eliminate Cluster Bombs.

Barack Obama is opposed to the militarization of space.

Barack Obama has set a goal of the elimination of nuclear weapons, but will not do so unilaterally.

Barack Obama will target and attack those who attack our nation and build alliances with everyone else.

Barack Obama will meet with leaders of foreign countries and rebuild our nation's relationships around the world.

Barack Obama will make sensible reforms to United States policy towards Cuba, allowing more visits and more economic exchange with Cuba for Cuban-American families.

Barack Obama will double United States humanitarian foreign aid.

Barack Obama will pass comprehensive immigration reform in his first year in office.

Barack Obama will stand with Caucus for Priorities for sensible reductions in our military expenditures and reinvestment in our infratructure and our people. Watch this video.

Barack Obama is for portable, opt-out pensions for working families.

Barack Obama is for ready return income tax returns that benefit all Americans who have straightforward taxes.

Barack Obama will eliminate income taxes entirely for fixed income seniors making under $50,000 a year.

Barack Obama is for a Universal Health Care plan that has shared responsibility between Government, Business and Individuals.

Barack Obama is for true net neutrality.

Barack Obama is for transparency in our government and public access to the work done in Washington D.C.

Barack Obama voted for accountability on FISA.

Barack Obama contributed to the effort to reverse the South Dakota abortion ban.

Barack Obama will pay our teachers more.

Barack Obama will create a national service program for college students.

Barack Obama will routinely ask parents to help in the education of their children.

Barack Obama will pass a law banning replacement workers.

Barack Obama has spoken out against homophobia and Anti-Semitism at African American churches.

Barack Obama has spoken in favor of condom use to combat AIDS at evangelical mega churches.

Barack Obama and his wife Michelle took a public HIV test in Kenya to promote testing as a means of preventing the spread of AIDS/HIV.

Barack Obama has made the central internal credo of his campaign be the three words, Respect, Empower, Include.

Barack Obama graduated from Columbia University and went to work as a community organizer on Chicago's South Side.

Barack Obama is a Constitutional Scholar who will promote respect for the rule of law and a return to respect for the Constitution within our Exectutive Branch.

Finally, Barack Obama understands the meaning of the fundamental moral imperatives that underly the politics of our party. (Watch that clip.)

---------------

But while that record and his strong debate performance might have sealed the deal for some people they also might not come out to vote.

We can't afford that.

If you agree with me that Barack Obama should be president then we can't just watch debates and see how well Barack performed. We need to turn that performance into votes by taking action. Calling voters in PA. Traveling to PA for GOTV. Donating to the campaign so they have the resources to win. Writing a letter to the editor saying how well you thought Barack did.

Barack is doing everything he can and he just did very well in the debate. I think we owe it to him to do our share of the work.

He just endured two hours of relentless right-wing attacks from a media that wants desperately to tear him down. The least we can do is fight back and take action!

If you have had enough of gotcha politics. Take action.

If you want real change in America. Take action.

If you want to see Barack Obama as President on January 20th, 2009. Take action.

We can do this but it won't happen if we stay on the sidelines.

Democracy begins with you. Tag. Your it.

GET ACTIVE!

What a load of complete bullshit. It really is no wonder that people are cynical about politics.

amiches, they've treated Hillary's entire campaign like a ONE-SIDED debate; Didn't you notice it? Oh, my guess is you did not care about it, since Obama was receiving rather positive reviews. If the media picks the presidential nominee, I will not even consider myself a democrat any longer (a 1984 reminder).

At this point, I'm ready to respond to what the primary voters will decide.

If the media's glee is any prediction, I'm planning on sitting this one out, and I hope Obama supporters do not upset enough of Hillary's supporters to vote for McCain.

**If that is the final result, then, McCain will have what Obama lacks: a love fest by the media PLUS a significant measure of traditional democratic voters.**

Sniper gate:  She was the first lady, I can tell you there would have been a briefing and snipers would have been mentioned and if they didn't use the safer landing approach they screwed up.  And if she had simply said we needed to change the receiving plans due to the threat of snipers it would have been a true statement.

He is way out of his league. They made him, now they are starting to break him down. They've decided they already have Clinton smashed, and they are beginning to go after him. They think they will still get him the nomination, but that they can now somehow propel McCain safely forward if they start now.

Senator Clinton is in bed with MARK PENN who is tied into telecommunications, and engaged in all kinds of foreign trade deals that are basically against everything Democrats supposedly are against.

It is NO ACCIDENT that the questions were a soft pitch for her, and unrelenting with him.  He also got interupted by the moderatetor on nearly EVERY answer, and she got more time.

She lied about Tuzla- that's valor theft, and its been soft pedaled by the media, cause she's a girl. She equivocated and minimized lying.
She's giving you talking points; the real story is what Bill is going ahead and doing to increase their personal fortune; and what she has involved herself with in her long-term association with Mark Penn.

And notice: not even a mention of THAT particular scandal by the "journalists" engaged in this assault on Obama.

Wow, just wow! You seem awfully bitter.

Actuually, I have always wondered why Obama has not been taken to task about his lies about being conceived during the marches on Selma in 1965 when he was born in 1961. What about that questionnaire he denies ever seeing? And being sent to private school in Hawaii just does not equate with the "raised by a single mother on food stamps" that he puts out there.

Obama just got a slight taste of what Hillary has been going through this whole race.

Re: This is junk... (none / 0)

I don't hold Obama to task for this. I think it's a fantasy story he was probably told by his mother and father and probably never questioned the accuracy- until it was pointed out to him that it couldn't be true. He hasn't stated it since then.

His mother was single parent for a short period but living with her parents in Hawaii until she married....so she had the support of a good family and was not struggling but I don't think I've heard Obama say that were on food stamps and coming from a Single parent home but that would be incorrect.

Obama AND Hillary got a taste tonight of what Hillary has been dealing with for the last 16 years...It's just that it was more equal opportunity bashing than usual and Obama got his first taste.

>>>>> that's valor theft<<<<<

To steal someone valor (or honor) you have wear or claim a medal you did not earn....such as a person who didn't receive a purple heart and says they did. She stole nobodys' valor.

She did fly into a combat zone- and although did not come under sniper fire- sniper fire was in the area in the surrounding hills. Had she been wounded or fatally wounded- she would not have received the purple heart because even as first lady, she was a civlian. Tonight was about the 10th time she has apologized for being wrong about the detailed facts of the Tuzla story and it was Obama who brought the story up when he stated they both had 'gaffes' in speaking  on the compaign trail. Then the debate commentators questioned her more about the 'gaffe' on Tuzla.

Re: Fight Back! Post-Debate Call to Obamaction (2.00 / 3)

Also quite remarkable how Obama totally gave Clinton a pass when she as much as admitted (for the first time as far as I know) that she LIED. I'm sure none of the Clinton supporters on here will give him any credit for that, but he easily could have drilled her for that, not unlike she did on some of the other things.

Let me repeat that: Obama has completely avoided talking about Clinton's biggest negative news story.

That says something to me.

It speaks for itself.

And note : there was NOT a single question about Mark Penn, Bill and Colombia.

What an egregiously imbalanced debate.

The O-man rocks.  This did nothing to make Clinton shine; it just shows how very much she is part of the corporte propaganda machine, just like Bush was.

Re: Fight Back! Post-Debate Call to Obamaction (none / 0)

Tonight's "debate" was definitely a stacked deck.
NOT ONE QUESTION ABOUT MARK PENN'S TIES TO COLUMBIA; HIS CONTINUED INVOLVEMENT IN THE CAMPAIGN; OR BILL CLINTON'S TIES TO THE COLUMBIA;  This is a hell of a lot more important and insidious than "lapel pins" and who someone runs into in a community meeting.

Stephanopolous is HARDLY unbiased, and also just repeats Sean Hannity . . .

MARK PENN's Clients own the media; they also own Clinton and McCain, and if folks vote for them they are just helping the corporations tear apart democracy.  The corporate media are little more than propaganda; we learned it with Bush, now we have to look at the Clinton machine and all their tentacles.

Sen. Obama is the only candidate that isn't tied up with lobbyists and isn't selling out our nation for personal gain.  He is not among the 1%, and a lot of the B.S. being touted by the Republicrat and Republican candidates are flat out manipulations to get the vote for the corporate fiefdom.

TG for the internet.  If Obama looses the election, I bet the first law the pass is to lose network neutrality.

I'm getting more news these days from the blogs.

It's time to start hitting the sponsors.  We buy their products, and then they support these networks.

That is the only way, to get involved.

Wake up - the only Democrats who aren't horrified by last night is the Hillaryis44 wing of the party - the 100 or 200 usernames that blog on there and on no quarter.

Yesterday - and I'm an Obama supporter - I laughed at the idea that the moderators would even bring up Tuzla.  Surely they have more important things to ask.  Nope - that's all they care about; that and flag pins.  If you there was a winner last night other than McCain, then you're laboring under an illusion that anything that hurts Obama hurts Clinton.  It's possible - and quite easy - to make them both look bad; just set up a hatchet job and call it a debate.

Ed Rendell today said he was disappointed in the whole thing.

Re: Fight Back! Post-Debate Call to Obamaction (2.00 / 1)

This is what we (Hillary or Obama) in the general election.

Tonight, it was the commentators vs. the Democrats.

I thought Hillary and Obama looked pretty good.  Obama looked better at the end, the commentators were relentless in the beginning.

Hillary is really good at the talking points, that is where she excels.  She's done well in every debate.

I was glad to finally hear Hillary say that she would support Obama if he wins the election, it was the first time I've heard it.  After raising McCain over Obama so many times, I needed to hear that.  Hopefully, she'll stop with the McCain business now.

Hillary also came the closest she has to meaningfully addressing the Bosnia issue.  She said she was embarrassed and took responsibility, rather than inventing another story, or blaming the media.  Finally.

What was that question about the lapel pin doing there?  Am I so out of touch with people that I didn't know they will vote on whether a person wears a lapel pin or not?  Especially when not wearing it a statement about patriotism being more than wrapping oneself in a flag?

Why did we not hear about Colombia?  How is Hillary going to separate herself from her husband who opposes and undermines US policy by supporting  oppressive and sometimes murderous foreign leaders?

And what about the economy?  How do they plan to stimulate the economy?  How do they plan to improve our schools.

Affirmative action?  Where did that come from?

Discussion on taxes I thought was fair.

How about, if you could solve any one problem, what would it be?

I like Obama's position on Chief of staff.  He certainly seemed confident about his role there.

Wierd debate, very discordant.

I sent them my 2 cents, which is about all it's worth with my sinus headache:

It's hard to describe my disgust for both the content and behavior of Charles Gibson and George Stephanopolis tonight. What an incredible waste of airtime, using up over half the debate on meaningless "gotcha" issues. Gibson attacking Obama's patriotism is directly out of the Republican playbook. I won't be watching ABC in the future - I hope your Republican Hit Piece/Jerry Springer Vapidfest disguised as a debate was worth the loss of viewership that you will suffer.

Re: Oh, I'm writing to ABC alright (none / 0)

It wasn't a great debate, but it was a much fairer debate than those in the past. HRC and BHO both took the gotcha politics on the back and forth.

Obama is not a good debater or an interview where he has to answer questions, but even he was off his game tonight. He seemed tired, no sense of humor and I don't think he smiled even once. He was more respectful to HRC in this debate than in most- perhaps because they didn't let either have a pen and paper becaue this is the first time I saw Obama actually look in her direction while she spoke. He could learn a great deal from watching how she handles herself.

Clinton is in her element and knows her issues backwards and forwards- she smiled- she laughed and was at ease- she's used to being asked dumb and gotcha questions from the media- so she isn't thrown as much.

But the ABC debate was just a taste of the future debates between the eventual democratic nominee and McCain....who isn't a good debater- but a good interview and they will be playing softball.
I wouldn't write ABC and say great debate.

It was nice to see Senator Clinton give some support to her Dem opponent by saying he is electable.

I think her advisers are the problem.  Friend of mine few into PA today next to a notable media type who knows all the candidates (JM is as far as I'll go, it was a personal conversation - you figure it out) who said much the same.

I think in the long run the negative campaigning may well be the breaking of a fever, and as such have its own positive effect.  Such is the way of our messy American democracy, but gosh it works!

Welcome to our world. (2.00 / 1)

Hillary supporters have been trying to fight the media alone for the last several months. We've had to endure people questioning whether Hillary's voice catching in NH was authentic, whether she's only a senator because Bill cheated, whether she's trying to appeal to racists, whether she's pimping out Chelsea, remarks about how she sounds like a nagging wife, an exruciating examination of a non-issue about something that happened in Bosnia 12 years ago, etc. etc.

While all that was going on, a lot of Obama supporters, as well as the campagin, either stayed silent or urged the media onwards. Complaints from Clinton folks were belittled and mocked--just this week, even, when there was a protest outside NBC.

I sympathize with the Obama folks about the questioning tonight, which seemed to focus way too much on the trivial and mundane. But that the media cannot be trusted and that their unfairness must be challenged at all times should have been obvious before tonight. They should certainly never be encouraged to do their dirty work, as they were by many Obama folks up until now. It seems that some people still don't understand--their reaction upstream is to wish that ABC had asked more silly questions to Clinton, instead of not asking silly questions to anyone.

It's a lesson we learned in 2000 and 2004, and something that Hillary supporters have known for months, if not years. Don't think the media is your friend, even when they're attacking your opponent. They're not.

Re: Welcome to our world. (none / 0)

Re: Welcome to our world. (none / 0)

There may or may not have been a single debate like that, but the tone of the coverage for the entirety of the last few months has been harshly negative towars her. I'd gladly trade all of that for 45 minutes of unfair grilling at a single debate.

I'm not saying that Obama didn't get unfair treatment. I'm simply saying it's something that Hillary has been dealing with for a very long time now.

Shameful (none / 0)

This debate made me long for the innocent days of Wolf Blitzer or Tim Russert asking B.S. hypothetical questions.

In some ways I'm glad of what they did, because it's getting out the ridiculous and specious attacks that have been festering on the internet for some time out in the open.  We deal with them almost daily here... but that doesn't forgive Charlie Gibson or George Stephanopoulos for wallowing in those feces when there are literally dozens of important issues that need to be faced by the next president.

Stephanopoulos should not have been tapped for this debate.  His bias was clear: they threw one "gotcha" question at Clinton about Tuzla to say they were "fair," but the majority of his ridiculous attacks were sent towards Obama.  You don't go as hard after your ex-boss's wife as you do the new guy, I'm sure.

As an Obama supporter who still respects Clinton, the hatchet job by ABC is as good as an endorsement of John McCain.
